What Nosework is
In nose work a dog searches for hidden target odors and the handler calls the find. NACSW trials test four search elements: containers, interior rooms, exterior areas and vehicles. Searches are timed. An NW1 or NW2 title takes a perfect score: every hide in all four elements found within the time, with no more than three faults.
All three target odors, birch, anise and clove, can be used at every level. What changes is the hunt: one hide in each element at NW1, one to three announced hides at NW2, and at NW3 up to three hides the handler is not told about. Before NW1 a dog needs the ORT title, earned by passing the Odor Recognition Test for all three odors. After NW3 comes the NW3 Elite title, which opens the points-based Elite Division, ELT1 to ELT3.
What Title keeps for your Nosework dog
Searches with time and faults
Log a practice search with its time in seconds and its faults, so you can see which element is slowing the dog down.
Every trial result on the timeline
Record the element, time, placement and whether the dog passed. The trial sits on the dog’s timeline next to the training behind it.
NACSW titles by code and name
ORT, NW1, NW2, NW3, NW3 Elite, the element titles and the Elite Division titles are recognised and group under NACSW on the record. AKC Scent Work titles are recognised too, under the AKC.
Notes for the next search
Where you searched, what went well, what went poorly and the next goal, so a hard hide becomes a plan rather than a memory.
